March 21, 2000 Student arrested on confinement, battery chargesSource: Capt. Ronald J. Fosnaugh, (765) 494-8221 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue University police early today (Tuesday, 3/21) arrested a male student in connection with a confinement and battery incident involving a female student acquaintance. Jie Chi, 23, of 230-8 Sheetz St., West Lafayette, a senior in the School of Science, was taken into custody after the victim reported that she struggled with Chi and was held against her will in a confrontation on campus about 4 a.m. The woman told police she was battered after she left Knoy Hall of Technology to return to her car and noticed Chi in a car parked behind hers. The incident allegedly occurred after they argued about their relationship. She told police that when she refused to talk further, Chi began hitting her and dragging her back toward Knoy. Chi reportedly struck, choked and knocked her down during the altercation. She sustained minor injuries. Chi subsequently let her go and left the area in his car. Police later made contact with Chi at his apartment. He said he wanted to take the woman back to Knoy Hall to talk when the struggle ensued. He was taken to the Tippecanoe County Jail on suspicion of criminal confinement and battery resulting in injury. Chi's cash bond was set at $500. Criminal confinement and battery are Class D felonies, each punishable by a jail term of up to one-and-a-half years and/or a fine of up to $10,000. Source: Capt. Ronald J.
