March 17, 2000 Jazz piano legend Tommy Flanagan returns to PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Legendary jazz pianist Tommy Flanagan will play with his trio at Loeb Playhouse in Stewart Center at 8 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the final concert of the 1999-2000 Jazz Set presented by Purdue University Convocations. Flanagan's discography suggests that he may have played on more albums and more seminal jazz albums produced in the last 50 years than any other pianist, if not any other musician. Those recordings include Sonny Rollins' "Saxophone Collosses," John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Miles Davis' "Collector's Items," and Wes Montgomery's "The Incredible Jazz Guitar." Gary Giddins, in The Village Voice, called Flanagan's own albums "the best and most beautiful trio albums ever recorded" Flanagan is making his second visit to Purdue Convocations' Jazz Set. His first, in November '92, included his trio and special guest Kenny Burrell. On this visit, Flanagan is joined by Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums, who have been his regular trio for the past several years. Both have also appeared at Purdue, but not with Flanagan. "The jazz trio: It's at the very core of jazz. You can strip it down and you can build it up, but the interplay between piano, bass and drum kit is as essential as you can get in this music," said Don Seybold, associate director of Convos. "It's rare that we get the opportunity to come into the presence of someone who has made such a significant contribution to his or her field that we can honestly refer to them as a 'legend.' Tommy Flanagan is clearly one such artist." Convocations will continue its series of Jazz Cafes, starting at 6:30 p.m. before the concert. The cafes feature a cash bar, conversation and a detailed display on the artist, his background, discography and more. The Jazz Cafe for the Tommy Flanagan Trio concert will be in the Sagamore Room on the second floor of the Purdue Memorial Union and is free to patrons coming to the April 7 concert. Tickets to the Flanagan concert are $20 for the public and $18 for Purdue students. Charge by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW or stop by campus box offices.
