PMO presents musical adaptation of cartoon series

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A pop culture phenomenon is coming to the stage as Purdue Musical Organizations presents "Schoolhouse Rock Live!" the musical adaptation of the TV cartoon series, on Sunday, March 5.

In the 1970s and '80s, the Saturday morning series "Schoolhouse Rock" taught history, math, grammar, science and politics through clever, tuneful songs. Its toe-tapping lyrics entered a generation's lexicon and, four Emmy Awards later, its melodies are still a pop-culture frame of reference for an astounding number of under-30 Americans.

PMO has obtained performance rights for the stage play adapted from the original Schoolhouse Rock series and will perform the show during a tour of Lafayette-area schools throughout the week of Feb. 28-March 4. Then on Sunday, March 5, PMO will present shows on the West Lafayette campus at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Matthews Hall, Room 210. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $6 for students, and can be purchased at the door. Tickets also can be purchased in advance at the Loeb Box Office or by calling (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW.

Those who camped out it front of the television every Saturday morning from 1973 to 1985 will recognize the tune "Conjunction Junction, What's Your Function?" "Schoolhouse Rock" also taught children how a bill becomes a law in "I'm Just a Bill," the names of the planets of our solar system in "Interplanet Janet," and how to turn an adjective into a perfectly good adverb in "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here."

"In our musical version of the cartoon series, nerve-wracked school teacher Tom is anxious about his first day of teaching," said Julie Ricciardi, PMO Club director. "The night before school starts, Tom tries to relax by watching television. Characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the TV set to show him how to teach his students through imagination and music."
