February 17, 2000 Party results in probation for Kappa Kappa GammaWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority will be on probation for the next year for actions at an off-campus party Feb. 4. Andrew Robison, assistant dean of students, said the sorority is responsible for members and guests who were arrested for underage consumption of alcohol. Police arrested 64 people at a party at Allison's Banquet Hall, Battle Ground. Robison noted that chapter did not purchase or supply alcohol for the event. Robison conducted a hearing for the Office of the Dean of Students with the chapter officers and adviser. Student organizations cannot appeal probation rulings, only more serious sanctions such as suspension or withdrawl of university recognition. Additional sanctions may be handed down by the sorority's national organization or by the campus Panhellenic Judicial Board. The sorority will be on university probation through Feb. 28, 2001. The organization will be on social probation through Dec. 31. While on social probation, the sorority may not sponsor or co-sponsor any event where alcohol is present. Robison said the chapter is expected to plan and fund three hours of alcohol education programs for members; pay for damages to the dance hall, a nearby post office and a bus; and sponsor a seminar about proper party planning that should feature a speaker from the Indiana Excise Police. The chapter can petition to lift the social probation after Sept. 30, provided the organization has completed the education program, made restitution and conducted the seminar.
