November 12, 1999 Nuclear safety expert named distinguished professorWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The Purdue University Board of Trustees today (Friday, 11/12) named Mamoru Ishii a distinguished professor of nuclear engineering.
Ishii, who is the director of Purdue's Institute of Thermal-Hydraulics, is an international authority on nuclear thermal-hydraulics and reactor safety and heads a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission project at Purdue for testing safety systems on the next generation of nuclear power plants. "A distinguished professorship recognizes outstanding performance in teaching, research and service, and it is the ultimate peer recognition for faculty," said Robert L. Ringel, executive vice president for academic affairs. "Dr. Ishii's career is an outstanding illustration of the kind of individual Purdue seeks out for this honor." There are now 49 distinguished professorships at Purdue. Ishii joined the Purdue faculty in 1988. He was named assistant head of the nuclear engineering department in 1994. He received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Yokohama National University in Yokohama, Japan, in 1966 and his master's degree in the same discipline from New York University in 1968. He completed his doctoral degree in mechanical engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1971. After spending a year as a postdoctoral fellow at Georgia Tech, Ishii served two years as a research scientist at the Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Grenoble, C.E.A., France. He then returned to the United States in 1974 to work as a research engineer in the reactor analysis and safety division of the Argonne National Laboratory, where he continues to serve as a consultant. He was also an adjunct professor of nuclear engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. In other action, the board authorized awarding a posthumous bachelor of science degree to Andrew Carl Wesenberg, Oshkosh, Wis.., who died Oct. 9 from injuries sustained in an traffic accident. Wesenberg was enrolled in the final course required for his aeronautical technology degree at the time of his death. He attended classes at the Purdue School of Technology statewide delivery system site at Indianapolis.
