November 3, 1999 Business prof chosen as chancellor for Purdue North CentralWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. James B. Dworkin, who has served the Purdue Krannert School of Management as an associate dean and professor of labor and industrial relations, will be the next chancellor of the Purdue North Central campus.
"Professor Dworkin is a skilled administrator and an accomplished academic," Purdue President Steven C. Beering said when he announced the appointment today (Wednesday 11/3). "He has been much sought after by other universities, and I am gratified that he will continue his career with Purdue." Dworkin was the unanimous recommendation of the search committee, which was comprised of faculty, staff and students from the North Central campus and led by James W. Yackel, chancellor at Purdue Calumet. The appointment is effective Jan. 10. Located on 275 acres north of Westville, Purdue North Central draws students primarily from LaPorte, Porter, Starke and surrounding counties in northern Indiana. "Purdue North Central, now 32 years young, plays a key role not only in education but also in economic development for northern Indiana," Dworkin said. "I am excited about the opportunities and challenges it presents." Dworkin joined Purdue in 1976, served as an associate dean for the Krannert School for 10 years, and recently served as acting dean. As an administrator, he has been involved in the recruitment of new faculty and staff; fund-raising; and the development of new programs, including the new management graduate school opened this fall in Germany. The recipient of several awards for teaching excellence, Dworkin said he intends to continue his teaching as well as his research at Purdue North Central. "Even during my years as an administrator, I have always tried to maintain touch with my 'regular job,' teaching and research," Dworkin said, "and I plan to continue to give that some attention in the future as well." His research has explored labor issues, including those within professional athletics, especially major-league baseball. He also has served as an arbitrator, mediator and fact-finder in labor-management disputes and has been a consultant to the assistant secretary for policy, evaluation and research at the U.S. Department of Labor. He is the author of two books, "Owners Versus Players: Baseball and Collective Bargaining," and "Reflections on the Transformation in Industrial Relations." Dworkin, originally from Cincinnati, earned his bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Cincinnati and his doctorate from the University of Minnesota. When classes began this fall at Purdue North Central, 3,355 students were taking 31,631 credit hours of classes. That represents a growth of almost 30 percent in students and more than 60 percent in credit hours since Dale Alspaugh became chancellor there in 1984. Alspaugh, who was scheduled to retire earlier this year, had agreed to stay in office until the search committee completed its work. Alspaugh was North Central vice chancellor for academic affairs and acting chancellor from 1981 to 1984. A professor of aeronautical and astronautical engineering, he joined Purdue in 1959.
