Former astronaut to speak, motivate youngsters

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Guy Gardner, a Purdue alumnus and former astronaut, will speak about his experiences during a presentation at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in Room 218 of Stewart Center at the university's West Lafayette campus. The presentation is open to the public.

The following morning, he will usher in Fall Space Day, an event that will see 200 grade school children exploring their interests in space and science. Registration for that event is closed.

Gardner, who earned a master of science degree in aeronautics and astronautics from Purdue in 1970, piloted space shuttle flights in 1988 and 1990. He now is a math teacher at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, Va.

During Fall Space Day, students and their teachers will learn about rocketry and orbital mechanics, build an edible space station and participate in a simulated shuttle mission, among other activities. Gardner will be on hand to interact with students and tell them what it's like to fly in space. The program begins with registration at 8:45 a.m. in the Class of '50 Lecture Hall, where Gardner will make opening remarks at 9:30. Activities will continue from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Recitation and Stanley Coulter halls.
