Astronauts reunite on campusJournalists are invited to cover three events in conjunction with Purdue's reunion of 18 of its 19 living alumni astronauts on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 22 and 23. News conference: 3:30 p.m. Friday, Krannert Building Auditorium. KU band satellite feed available from Galaxy 7, transponder 14 upper; downlink frequency, 12005 horizontal. Broadcasters also may reserve time in advance to ask questions from their studios via satellite. Time will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Luncheon: President Steven C. Beering will talk about Purdue's engineering master plan during a speech to astronauts and other engineering alumni at a lunch that starts at noon Friday on Memorial Mall. Purdue vs. Penn State football game: The astronaut alumni will be honored Saturday on the field during halftime of the Purdue vs. Penn State football game. New program to fight alcohol abusePurdue's Student Health Center will introduce a new program to help inform college students about the dangers of alcohol abuse. Indiana Attorney General Jeff Modisett and Purdue student wellness director Nancy Maylath will conduct a news conference in the Anniversary Drawing Room (Room 304) of the Memorial Union at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, to announce that Purdue will be among the first colleges in Indiana to use Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS). The TIPS program is designed to teach servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol how to prevent intoxication, drunken driving and underage drinking. The new program will supplement the university's existing alcohol education programs, which have featured Alcohol 101, an interactive CD program. Events Thursday, Oct. 21. Walter Conti, former chairman of the National Restaurant Association and of the Culinary Institute of America, will deliver this year's Eva Goble Lecture at 4:30 p.m. in the East and West Faculty Lounges, Purdue Memorial Union. Jones, chairman, president, and chief executive officer, Escient Inc., Carmel, Ind., and a 1999 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, will talk about "Convergence of the Internet With Home Entertainment" at the Krannert Executive Forum at 11:30 a.m. in the Krannert Building Auditorium. Reporters are asked to refrain from asking questions, videotaping or taking photographs during the lecture, but all are allowed during the student question-and-answer sessions. The University Senate will meet at 2:30 p.m. in Room 302, Stewart Center, to hear Arthur Hansen talk about the challenges he faced as Purdue president from 1971 to 1982 and some of the qualities a Purdue president should have. A search is under way to find a successor to President Steven C. Beering, who is scheduled to retire June 30, 2000. The physics department will simultaneously present three 20-minute shows from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Physics Building: "Black Magic Mechanics" in Room 223; "Igor's Lightning Lair" in Room 114; and "Fire and Ice" in Room 112. At 11 a.m., ghastly ghosts, instant plastic and slime will be demystified during an hour-long chemistry show in Room 200, Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. Former Indiana congressman Lee Hamilton will speak about the role of higher education in fostering effective government during a talk to begin at 7 p.m. in the North Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union. Preceding his discussion will be an informal reception with students. Journalists may conduct brief interviews with Hamilton toward the end of the reception, from about 6:30 p.m. to just prior to his talk. The event is sponsored by the School of Agriculture.
