October 15, 1999 Remington sculptures donated to PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. A piece of the old American West has found a new home in the Purdue University Galleries. Thanks to Purdue alumnus Don Newman of Clearwater, Fla., 17 bronze sculptures cast from molds fashioned by renowned American artist Frederic Remington have become part of the university's permanent collection. The pieces will be on display in the Stewart Center Gallery from Oct. 22 through Dec. 12. These Remingtons are "posthumous castings," which means they are not originals but were made from the original molds after the artist's death. Newman also has donated three additional bronze sculptures by Remington contemporaries. All the bronzes were part of his private collection. Remington was a prolific and successful illustrator, painter and sculptor who became fascinated by the American frontier during a visit West in 1881. From then until his death in 1909, he devoted himself to recording images from that time and place. Newman graduated from Purdue with a degree in pharmacy in 1947 and owned and operated several pharmacies in the South Bend area from 1955 to 1973. He later earned a master of business administration degree from Indiana University and a law degree from Georgetown University. From 1985 to 1989 he served as undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He continued as acting secretary of the same cabinet office under President George Bush in 1989. Newman will be the guest speaker at the formal opening of the exhibit on Friday, Oct. 29. He will give his remarks at 5:30 p.m. in Room 310 Stewart Center, with a reception in the gallery to immediately follow. The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday though Friday and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
