June 30, 1999 Purdue bells to ring out for Independence DayWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. The bells of the Purdue Bell Tower will toll in celebration of Independence Day on Sunday (7/4) as part of "Let Freedom Ring," a national observance. Originating at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia and coordinated by the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution, the bell-ringing ceremony honors the delegates from the 13 original colonies who adopted the Declaration of Independence 223 years ago. Bells at some 10,000 churches, courthouses, capitols and other institutions nationwide will ring 13 times at 1 p.m. EST Sunday to note the signing of the historic document on July 4, 1776. Also during the holiday weekend, the Purdue Bell Tower's carillon will play patriotic selections during its daily 12:21 p.m. and 7 p.m. serenades.
