Appointments and promotions-- Professor Edward N. Ashworth has become head of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. He has been interim department head for nine months, since William R. Woodson left the position to become director of Agricultural Research Programs for the School of Agriculture. Ashworth joined the department faculty in 1987 after working for 10 years as a plant physiologist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Maryland and West Virginia. His main area of research is freezing injury and winter survival in woody plants. For three of the past four years, students have named Ashworth the Outstanding Teacher in Horticulture.
Campus activities-- The Span Plan division of the Office of the Dean of Students is accepting applications for the annual Cecelia Zissis Graduate Student Grant. The $250 award is for part-time female graduate students, age 24 or older. The application deadline is April 26. Applicants must demonstrate academic potential and financial need. Preference is given to students who are beginning graduate study. The award was established in July 1987 to recognize Zissis' 37 years of service to the university. For more information, contact Suzanne Guinn, Span Plan counselor, at (765) 494-7662.-- The Women's Resource Office is sponsoring a seminar, "Leadership Issues for Women of Color" at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, in Room 214A, Stewart Center. Evelyn Hu-DeHart, chairwoman of ethnic studies at the University of Colorado, will lead the discussion. Her research has focused on the Chinese-American experience, and Latin American and Native American history.
Faculty and staff honors-- Harry Gibson, associate professor of forestry and agricultural engineering, received a 1999 Forest R. McFarland Award for outstanding service by way of organizing technical sessions and professional development seminars for the Society of Automotive Engineers.
