BCC sponsors symposium on author Toni Morrison

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Black Cultural Center Library at Purdue University will sponsor a symposium at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 1, about "The Creative Production of Toni Morrison: Preservation of African-American Cultural Heritage and History."

Morrison is the author of six novels, the latest of which is "Paradise," published in 1997. In 1988 Morrison won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her fourth novel, "Beloved." She was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993.

The symposium will consist of a panel of three graduate students who have done research on Morrison's works. They are Angela Hinton, a first-year doctoral student in American Studies; Portia Boulware, a third-year doctoral student in American Studies; and Furaha Norton, a visiting student from Cornell University, where she is a doctoral candidate in the English Department.

BCC Librarian Dorothy Washington said Morrison's works have made a major impact on the acceptability of African-American literature within higher education. Washington also said the Black Cultural Center Library wants to provide more opportunities for graduate students to present their research.
