IPFW presents Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne will present a speech and dinner with retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf as a fund-raiser for the IPFW Gates Athletic Scholarship Fund.

Schwarzkopf will present "Leadership: From the War Room to the Board Room" at 7 p.m. March 30, followed by dinner at 8 p.m., at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Tickets are on sale now and range from $25 per person for the speech to $1,000 for two tickets to a VIP photo reception with Schwarzkopf, plus speech and dinner seating.

An articulate and charismatic American leader, Schwarzkopf is an experienced manager who understands people, motivation and leadership. A four-star general, Schwarzkopf served two combat tours in Vietnam and was in charge of all military forces in the Persian Gulf War. Commanding numerous brigades, divisions, planning major tactical operations, and working hands-on in the field shaped his views of leadership.

Also known as "Stormin' Norman" and "the Bear," Schwarzkopf is best known for his service as Commander in Chief, United States Central Command, and Commander of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1988-91. Schwarzkopf's command ultimately responded to the crisis with the largest U.S. deployment of troops since the Vietnam War, including portions of the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, as well as units from dozens of nations around the world. He is regarded not only for winning Operation Desert Storm, but also for maintaining the multinational coalition. He continued to command the operations until his retirement in August 1991.

Since his retirement from the military, Schwarzkopf has joined the ranks of successful authors with his best-selling autobiography, "It Doesn't Take A Hero." He is chairman of the STARBRIGHT Capital Campaign, which promotes improving the quality of life for seriously ill children. He is a co-founder, along with Paul Newman, of the Boggy Creek Gang, which is a year-round camp in Florida for children with chronic illnesses. Schwarzkopf is a national spokesman for the Recovery of the Grizzly Bear and for prostate cancer awareness. As a cancer survivor, he is a member of the board of the Association for the Cure of Prostate Cancer (Cap CURE), and he serves on the Nature Conservancy President's Conservation Council.

His lifetime of outstanding service epitomizes the very qualities of a leader. For his service to the nation, Schwarzkopf received three Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars, two Purple Hearts, the Congressional Gold Medal, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as well as many honors, degrees, and decorations from around the world.

Special Corporate Tables are available for $1,000 for the presentation. These tables seat a group of eight plus two Fort Wayne-area students and include a tax-deductible gift of $250 to the Gates Athletic Scholarship Fund.

Certificates for Schwarzkopf's lecture and/or dinner are on sale now. Seating is limited and will be based on reservation confirmation dates. For reservation information, call (219) 481-4101.

Other than the $1,000 VIP Reception Package and the Corporate Tables, other options are:

  • Speech only, $25 per person.
