Pre-game activities center around Slayter Hill

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Slayter Hill will be a center of activity before the Purdue Boilermakers open their home football season against the Rice University Owls Saturday (9/12).

The Alumni Cafe will be located on the corner of Stadium Avenue and Intramural Drive, said Rita Zawisza, director of special projects and partnerships for the Purdue Alumni Association. The cafe, catered by the Purdue Memorial Union, will open shortly after 8 a.m., three hours before the football game.

The Purdue All-American Marching Band will begin playing at 9:15 a.m. at Slayter Center for Performing Arts. Following the concert, the band will march to Ross-Ade Stadium where the Boilermakers will play Rice starting at 11:10 a.m.

In response to safety concerns on Slayter Hill, Purdue band alumni will supervise parking in the area bordered by Stadium Avenue, Intramural and Tower Drives and the David Ross Memorial Garden. The fee will be $5 for passenger vehicles and $10 for recreational vehicles. The proceeds will be used to fund band programs including special performances, facility improvements and student awards or scholarships, said Jay Gephart, assistant professor of university bands.

Free parking is available on the intramural fields and in the Northwestern and University Street parking garages.
