Fraternities disciplined for alcohol violations

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University has suspended a fraternity and placed three others on probation for alcohol violations during Grand Prix weekend.

Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity has been suspended through at least May 1999, while Acacia, Alpha Gamma Rho and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities have been placed on probation until May 1999, said Steve Akers, interim dean of students. The Office of the Dean of Students also will review cases of individual Purdue students arrested for alcohol-related offenses that weekend.

The four fraternities sponsored a party at the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter house, 629 University St.

In letters to the fraternity presidents, Akers said, "(The party) was in blatant disregard of Indiana state laws and university regulations governing the possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages. I have concluded that in addition to consumption of alcoholic beverages by juveniles and other persons under 21 years of age who obtained the alcoholic beverages in Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, invitations to the party were extended en masse to an unreasonably large segment of the campus community, thereby constituting an open event, contrary to university regulations."

While on suspension, Pi Kappa Alpha will continue to be a recognized social fraternity, but it will not be an organization in good standing. During the suspension, Pi Kappa Alpha may not use university facilities including meeting rooms or participate in intramural athletics or campus activities such as Grand Prix. Fraternity members may continue to use facilities, but not on behalf of the organization. Pi Kappa Alpha may not schedule any events requiring university approval.

Pi Kappa Alpha has the option of appealing the suspension through the campus appeals board.

The fraternities on probation have been put on notice that other violations of university regulations will likely result in suspension or withdrawal of recognition for the organization.

"I am confident that the men of Pi Kappa Alpha will bounce back from this troubling ordeal and refocus their energies on the more lofty virtues of Greek living such as personal and social development, community building, lifelong friendships and commitment to high standards of conduct," Akers said.
