'All-American' Marching Band sells tailgate enhancer

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Boilermaker fans now have a new tool for getting fired up before games -- the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band's new CD and cassette tape "Go Boilers!"

Unlike previous recordings of the marching band, this one is geared specifically towards the football and basketball crowds. "It's a perfect musical backdrop for tailgate activities before and after each game," said David Leppla, Purdue University Bands director.

Leppla and John Tagenhorst, music arranger for the "All-American" Marching Band, came up with the idea for this fund-raiser. With one office in Chicago and another in Beverly Hills, Tagenhorst makes his living as a commercial music arranger, working with commercials, films and television shows (soap opera "Another World" and the animated "Batman" series).

The groups featured on the CD -- the Electric Tailgate Band, the Boiler Sisters and the Tailgate Jazz Quintet -- were created specifically for this fund-raising project from Chicago's finest studio musicians and singers. "They sing thousands of radio and TV commercials to advertise products like Budweiser and McDonald's. They're heard all over the world, but never seen," Tagenhorst said.

The CD contains 17 songs, including five tunes played by the "All-American" Marching Band, the Electric Tailgate Band's renditions of "Born to be Wild," "Tequila," and the "Boilermaker Opener," the Tailgate Jazz Quintet's upbeat versions of two Purdue traditional tunes, and the Boiler Sisters singing "We Are Family" and "Come on Boilers."

The "Go Boilers!" CD or cassette tapes may be purchased through University Bands at (765) 494-3952. They also may be purchased at Follett's, University Spirit, University Bookstore and Purdue Pride. The cost is $15 for a compact disc and $9 for a cassette tape. The proceeds go to support the activities of the "All-American" Marching Band.
