Counseling under way following student death

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A team of Purdue University counselors has begun counseling members of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity following the death early this morning (Friday, 9/12) of a fellow member.

The West Lafayette Police Department is investigating the death of Nathan A. Frank, 20, of Syracuse, Ind., a junior in the School of Liberal Arts.

Tippecanoe County Coroner Martin Avolt said police, fire and ambulance personnel were notified about 6:30 a.m. that Frank apparently had fallen from a top-floor window of the sleeping area of the fraternity, which is at 690 Waldron St., West Lafayette.

"At this time, the investigation is continuing, and any attempt at deciding mechanisms of death would be speculative," Avolt said. An autopsy is pending.

"The loss of a young life is always tragic, and our sympathy goes out to the young man's family, friends and fraternity brothers," said Stephen J. Akers, interim dean of students. "We have had several staff members on hand providing counseling to fraternity members since shortly after the death was reported, and our services will be available as needed throughout the weekend."

Akers said other students who seek counseling services should contact the Office of the Dean of Students or Counseling and Psychological Services.
