Among the numerous activities scheduled at the West Lafayette campus to help students become acquainted with Purdue are a welcoming parade at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23; the Boiler Gold Rush orientation program, which begins Aug. 17 for first-year students in the residence halls; orientation programs in most undergraduate schools on Sunday, Aug. 24; picnics and ice cream socials; and an activities carnival and callouts for various student organizations.
More than 1,600 incoming freshmen are registered for the optional Boiler Gold Rush program, designed to familiarize new students to the campus layout and traditions. In addition to recreational activities, every participant will attend sessions on diversity, healthy lifestyles and transitions from high school to college.
Two local celebrities will be on hand for the festivities. Purdue men's basketball coach Gene Keady is the keynote speaker for the "Athletics and Traditions" presentation at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, in the Ross-Ade Stadium south end zone. Newspaper columnist Harlen Cohen is presenting six information sessions on healthy lifestyles -- at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, and Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Room 200 of the Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. Cohen writes the nationally syndicated advice column "Help Me Harlen."
Students not participating in Boiler Gold Rush will be able to move into university residence halls starting Aug. 17, but will have to pay a daily $29.50 room and board fee or a $13 room only rate for each day before Friday, Aug. 22, when regular housing contracts start.
On Aug. 22, staff and veteran students in each hall will be available to direct new students and parents to the students' rooms and to serve refreshments. As for parking, most buildings will have 20-minute unloading zones. After families have unloaded belongings, they will be able to park in the garage northeast of the Purdue West Shopping Plaza or in the parking lot south of Earhart Hall.
Purdue residence halls will sponsor a welcoming parade at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, from the Windsor Residence Halls to Elliott Hall of Music. The first-year students will be joined by Purdue's "All-American" Marching Band, the Boilermaker Special, Purdue Pete and Purdue President Steven C. Beering. After the parade, students and their parents will attend the President's Gala to Welcome New Students at 7 p.m. in Elliott Hall. Beering will address the new students.
