JOURNALISTS: Here are some newsworthy Purdue events during the next two weeks.

Japanese exchange students work with animals

Five veterinary students from a Japanese university are on Purdue's campus to learn more about veterinary clinical practice. The students are working with animals, alongside faculty from Purdue's School of Veterinary Medicine, to learn more about small and large animal medicine, surgery, radiology, and other clinical areas. The students from Kitasato University School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences will continue their classes through Friday, Aug. 15. CONTACT: Dr. A.Y.M. Boiler Gold Rush attracts incoming students

This year's Boiler Gold Rush Aug. 17-20. for incoming freshmen will include 1,600 participants. The orientation program includes the Gold Rush Olympics, with all 1,600 students, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, on the intramural fields; and an activities and business fair featuring more than 80 Greater Lafayette businesses and student organizations, 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, in the North and South Ballrooms, Purdue Memorial Union. Aug. 22.
The Purdue "All-American" Marching Band will crown this year's featured twirlers including the famous Golden Girl. Auditions begin at 4 p.m. at the band practice field on Third Street across from the residence halls. Judges will choose the Golden Girl, Girl in Black and Silver Twins for the 1997-98 school year. Announcement of winners will be made between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Room 15, Elliott Hall of Music. Winners will be available for interviews immediately after the announcement. Aug. 23
. Welcoming parade from the Windsor Residence Halls to Elliott Hall of Music. 6:15 p.m. First-year students will join Purdue's "All-American" Marching Band, the Boilermaker Special, Purdue Pete and Purdue President Steven C. Beering in the parade. Then, students and their parents will attend the President's Gala to Welcome New Students at 7 p.m. in Elliott Hall of Music.
