Purdue honors 8 as Distinguished Science Alumni

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eight outstanding graduates of Purdue University have received Distinguished Alumni Awards from Purdue's School of Science.

The awards were established in 1990 to recognize graduates' contributions to and achievements in science and related fields. The group was honored during a day-long series of programs and events.

"A university and its programs are ultimately evaluated by the quality of their alumni," said Harry A. Morrison, dean of Purdue's School of Science. "The School of Science is proud of these individuals, who by their accomplishments provide the most compelling evidence of Purdue's tradition of graduating outstanding scientists and mathematicians."

The 1997 recipients are:

Charles A. Beeson, Wakarusa, Ind. , chemistry teacher and the math/science division leader at Penn High School in Mishawaka.

Dennis M. Conti, Monrovia, Md. , vice president for North American marketing for the Satellite Networks Division of Hughes Network Systems Inc.

Richard E. James, Camas, Wash. , chief executive officer of Labtec Enterprises Inc., a leading provider of speakers for multimedia computers.

Clinton F. Lane, Whitefish Bay, Wis. , executive vice president of Aldrich Chemical Co. Inc. in Milwaukee.

Fon-Che Liu, professor of mathematics at National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan , and a research fellow at the Institute of Mathematics, Academica Sinica in Taipei.

John T. Snow, Norman, Okla. , professor of meteorology and dean of the College of Geosciences at the University of Oklahoma.

Stuart A. Solin, a fellow at NEC Research Institute Inc. in Princeton , N.J.

Luther S. Williams, Rockville, Md. , assistant director of education and human resources at the National Science Foundation.
