Faculty and Staff Honors:

-- Edward Coyle and Leah Jamieson, professors of electrical and computer engineering, will receive the 1997 Chester F. Carlson Award for Innovation in Engineering Education from the American Society for Engineering Education. The award, to be presented at the organization's annual meeting in June, recognizes the professors' work on the Engineering Projects in Community Service program.

-- Adela Lozinska, Lafayette , has received the annual John C. Smalley Memorial Grant. The award was established in 1988 to encourage continuing education among clerical, service and administrative staff in the Housing and Food Services division. It pays up to $125 tuition toward coursework at Purdue or Ivy Tech State College. Lozinska is a food service worker at Cary Quadrangle Residence Hall.

-- Frederick Morse, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, will receive the Distinguished Fifty-Year Member Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers on June 28. The award is granted to individuals who have been a member of ASHRAE for 50 years, were a past society president, a fellow, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, or otherwise performed outstanding service for the society.

-- David Nolte, associate professor of physics, received the 1997 Ruth and Joel Spira Award for outstanding teaching of undergraduate physics. The award was based on his teaching of an honors laboratory in optics. Nolte also has been elected a Fellow of the Optical Society of America for "the demonstration and development of the science and applications of photorefractive semiconductor quantum wells."

-- Philip H. Swain, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of Purdue's Office of Distance Learning, has been named Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education. Fellow grade membership is the highest honor the organization bestows on its members.

-- Andrew Weiner, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will receive the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award from the American Society for Engineering Education at its annual meeting in June. The award recognizes outstanding researchers under the age of 40 who have made original contributions to their field. Weiner is being honored for his work in femtosecond optical pulse processing and the application of that technology to optics and optical communications.

Purdue students honored for achievements

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Nine Purdue University students were recently honored for their achievements.

-- Three engineering students are the first to receive scholarships through the Chemical Engineering Minority Scholars Program. The 1997 recipients are Andre L. Riley and Dexter L. Thompson, both of Indianapolis , and Jacqueline E. Ware, Racine , Ill . Recipients attend a short orientation period at a sponsor company the summer after their freshman year and receive a stipend from their sponsor to attend summer classes at Purdue. Students also gain work experience at their sponsor company, earning an industry-rate salary during summer internships after their sophomore and junior years. The goal of the program is to allow minority students to gain work experience in chemical engineering while still earning their degree in four years.

-- Cathy Downard, a freshman majoring in health physics from Daleville, Ind. , is the fifth winner of the Janine DeHart Outstanding Freshman Award. The Purdue Residence Hall Council presented the plaque and $200 cash award in April. The award is presented to the outstanding freshman leader for service to the residence halls. She has been involved in Meredith Hall activities including University Sing, Mother's Weekend and freshman council. The award was established by Janine DeHart, a student leader and hall counselor.

-- Heather DeRita, a junior majoring in accounting from Fort Wayne , Ind ., is the winner of the Robert L. Page Outstanding Leadership Award. The Purdue Residence Hall Council presented the award of an engraved pen set and $100 in April. The award recognizes a residence hall club president or governor for contributions to the residence hall and its environment. She has been president, social director and co-dance director for Shreve Hall for the past three years. The award is named for R.L. Page, who was director of residence halls for 20 years.

-- Ollie L. McCoy III, a senior majoring in industrial engineering from Indianapolis , and Danielle Burrell, a junior majoring in computer technology from Kankakee , Ill ., were recently honored for their service to the Black Cultural Center. McCoy received the $250 Howard G. McCall Award for his demonstrated consistency in leadership, service and dedication to the BCC as a publicity assistant. Burrell received the $200 Nettie L. Hubbard Award for her contributions and achievements as a member of the Jahari Dance Troupe and New Directional Players.

-- Melanie Bachman from Evansville , Ind . and Julia Wittgen from Jasper , Ind ., juniors in the School of Industrial Engineering, each received the 1997 Robert E. Savage Scholarship. The annual award is worth $5,000 and is intended to honor students who have demonstrated academic achievement and that they will successfully apply their skills to the future benefit of society.
