Fraternities, sorority disciplined for violations

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A Purdue University fraternity will serve a year on probation for alcohol and hazing violations, while another fraternity and a sorority were fined for alcohol violations.

On March 27, the Interfraternity Judicial Board found that members of Alpha Chi Rho violated the university's hazing policy and allowed students younger than 21 to consume alcohol. The time to appeal the judicial board's ruling has expired without an appeal by the fraternity.

The judicial board ruled that the fraternity will be on social probation through the end of the spring 1998 semester. At least 90 percent of the fraternity members will be required to attend Interfraternity Council seminars on membership development and risk management. Alpha Chi Rho must hold its own risk-management seminar and submit written risk-management and pledgeship programs for approval. Alpha Chi Rho also will pay a $500 fine.

Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and Delta Gamma sorority also have been sanctioned by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic judicial boards for violating university regulations about alcohol.

The Sigma Phi Epsilon members involved have been excluded from all chapter social activities and will be required to perform 25 hours of community service and attend a risk-management seminar. The fraternity also paid a $500 fine.

Delta Gamma paid a $500 fine and will conduct a risk-management seminar before Oct. 1. The seminar will be open to members of any Purdue sorority.
