EDITORS: This calendar lists events on Purdue's West Lafayette campus or involving people or programs off campus during the next four weeks. Events are free and open to the public, except where noted, and all are open to news media coverage. New or updated listings have two asterisks (**).

EVENTS

• Monday, April 21. Qualifications for the 40th Purdue Grand Prix. Noon to 6 p.m. at the kart track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. The race will be run Saturday, April 26.

• Saturday, April 26. Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff celebrity golf tournament. 8 a.m. Purdue South Golf Course. A Gala Week activity. $75 entry fee includes greens fee, cart rental and refreshments. Advance registration required; contact Leroy Keyes, (765) 463-6293.

• Saturday, April 26. Army ROTC Hall of Fame induction ceremony and reception, 9:30 a.m. in the Armory. A Gala Week activity.

• Saturday, April 26. The 1997 class parade and memorial service at John Purdue's grave, including the unveiling of a plaque commemorating the Class of 1946 for its part in redesigning the grave site. 11 a.m. A Gala Week activity. Tradition states the oldest living alumnus present leads the parade. Reunion classes will assemble between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m.

• Saturday, April 26. Academy Park Dedication, 11:30 a.m. Academy Park is Purdue's newest green space, in honor of all Purdue faculty. It will be used as an outdoor teaching arena and leisure area. The new park is bounded by Stewart Center, Memorial Mall, the Purdue Memorial Union and the Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry. A Gala Week activity.

• Saturday, April 26. University Bands Department luncheon. 11:30 a.m. Elliott Hall of Music Stage. Luncheon is the launch of the department's first capital campaign. Tickets are $12 from the University Bands office at (765) 494-0770 until April 18. A Gala Week activity.

• Saturday, April 26. 40th Purdue Grand Prix. Main race to begin about 2:30 p.m. on the kart track north of Ross-Ade Stadium. Sprint race for final qualifications to begin about noon. Alumni race to start about 1:20 p.m. Tickets $5 in advance, $6 at the gate. A Gala Week activity.

• Saturday, April 26. Taste of the Caucus. 3-6 p.m. Riehle Plaza in downtown Lafayette. A Gala Week activity. Food from Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff members, Purdue students and Lafayette residents will be available along with a variety of games. Admission is $2, and food tickets are $1 each.

• Saturday, April 26. Founders Day Reception and Banquet. The reception will be 4:45-5:45 p.m. in the main lounges of Purdue Memorial Union. The 6 p.m. banquet in the North and South ballrooms of the union will feature Purdue President Steven C. Beering, entertainment by the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and special alumni awards. • Saturday, April 26. The Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff Gala FUNdraiser Dance. 9 p.m.-1 a.m. University Inn, West Lafayette. A Gala Week activity. An evening of music, food and spirits to raise money for scholarships, service and leadership awards and gifts for African-American students. $20 per person, $10 per student.   ** Monday, April 28. Violet Haas Awards Reception. 3:30-5 p.m. Room 116, Agriculture and Research Building. The Council on the Status of Women is presenting the awards to Purdue's Health Promotion Programs; Patricia A. Carlisle, director of student support services at Purdue North Central; and Joan L. Marshall, associate dean of the School of Liberal Arts, for promoting women's issues and programs. The reception is free and open to the public.

  ** Saturday, May 17. Spring commencement ceremonies. 9:30 a.m. for Schools of Engineering; 2:30 p.m. for Schools of Management; Pharmacy, Nursing, Health Sciences; and Science. Elliott Hall of Music. Tickets are required for admission to the hall. Participants are issued tickets for family and friends.

  ** Sunday, May 18. Spring commencement ceremonies. 9:30 a.m. for Schools of Consumer and Family Sciences, Liberal Arts, and Veterinary Medicine; 2:30 p.m. for Schools of Agriculture, Education, and Technology. • Monday, April 21. American Music Review Twilight Concert. 7 p.m. Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.

• Tuesday, April 22. Varsity Band Twilight Concert. 7 p.m. Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.

• Wednesday through Saturday, April 23-26. Purdue Grand Prix Carnival featuring Poor Jack's Amusements. Ross-Ade Stadium parking lot. 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. April 23 and 24; 5:30 p.m. to midnight April 25; and 11 a.m. to midnight April 26.

• Thursday, April 24. "1812" Concert Band Twilight Concert. 7 p.m. Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.

• Friday, April 25. Jazz on the Hill Concert. 6 p.m. Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.

• Sunday, April 27. Symphonic and Alumni Concert Bands Concert. 2:30 p.m. Loeb Playhouse, Stewart Center.

• Sunday, April 27. The Black Cultural Center's New Directional Players spring review. 3 p.m. Fowler Hall, Stewart Center. A Gala Week activity.

• Sunday, April 27. Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra with the Kalichstein, Laredo, Robinson Trio. 3 p.m. Elliott Hall of Music. Purdue Convocations special event. Pairs of tickets are $18 and $15 for the public and $10 for students. Family Circle seats are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets are on sale at campus box offices or by phone at (765) 494-3933. Before the concert, conductor Raymond Leppard and Indiana composer David Ott will lead a free, public "informance" discussion at 2 p.m. in the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall.

• Monday, April 28. Variety Band Twilight Concert. 7 p.m. Slayter Center for the Performing Arts.

• Tuesday, April 29. Professor Marianne Boruch, Department of English, reads from her books of poetry. 7:30- 9 p.m. East Faculty Lounge, Purdue Memorial Union. Presented by Center for Artistic Endeavors, School of Liberal Arts.

• Tuesday, April 29. Purdue Musical Organizations' Spring Show. 8 p.m. Purdue Memorial Union Ballrooms. Annual concert featuring performances by all ensembles in Purdue Musical Organizations.

  ** Saturday, May 17. Purdue Varsity Glee Club End-of-Season Concert. 8 p.m. Loeb Playhouse. Tickets: $8, available at Loeb box office.

• Tuesday, April 22. Astronaut and Purdue alumnus John Blaha will give a free public talk on the space program and his four-month experience on board the orbiting Russian space station Mir. 8 p.m. Fowler Hall. Sponsored by the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Lafayette's Imagination Station.

  ** Thursday, April 24. Future Trends in Telecommunications. 4:30 p.m. Room 112, Physics Building. Dennis M. Conti, Hughes Network Systems. Conti will describe trends in both the "wired" and "wireless" worlds of telecommunications relative to technology, deregulation and human factors.

• Friday, April 25. Man Does Not Live By P&L Alone: Creating a Value-Added Finance Organization. 11:30 a.m. Krannert Auditorium, Krannert Building. Nancy H. Handel, vice president of corporate finance and treasurer, Applied Materials Inc., Santa Clara, Calif. Krannert Executive Forum.

• Saturday, April 26. Expanding Your Horizons in Science and Mathematics. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Purdue Armory. 350 sixth- to ninth-grade girls from the northern half of Indiana will attend hands-on workshops designed to provide information about math and science-related careers. • Monday-Friday, May 5-9. 12th Annual Engineering/Management Program. An intensive week-long conference for experienced engineers, scientists, technical specialists and engineering managers who have a desire to update or enhance their technical and managerial skills.
