JAN. 14-15: WINEGRAPE PRODUCTION IN THE MIDWEST SCHOOL
The Heartland Grape and Wine Coalition (Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue universities)
will hold a two-day school for beginning and novice grape growers at the Southwest
Michigan Research and Extension Center, Benton Harbor. Fee is $175. CONTACT: Tom

JAN. 21-23: AG FORUM
This event in Stewart Center at Purdue will feature programs on land use management,
farm-management strategies tailored to today's economy, the future of the Indiana
hog industry in the face of environmental complaints, and crop-planning concerns
for the coming season. Participants in the crop planning session can earn four continuing
credit units in categories 1A and 10 and five certified crop adviser credits. Cost: $25 for all three days of forum, $10 for a single day. More information about

JAN. 24: SCIENCE FORECAST
Science Forecast will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, in Stewart Center's Fowler
Hall and will feature Purdue researchers explaining their work on projects such as
the sensory effects of fat in food, safer basketball floors, pasteurization of shell
eggs to prevent salmonella food poisoning and the next generation of plant biotechnology

JAN. 24: AG ALUMNI FISH FRY
This year's Ag Alumni fish fry theme is "Show Time at the Fish Fry: A Little Bit of
Vegas and a Whole Lot of Carp." The event will feature a Vegas-style show complete
with an appearance by a would-be Elvis. Fish fry tickets are $12 and must be purchased
in advance at any county Extension office, any Purdue Ag department or the Purdue Ag

JAN. 27-31: CROP MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS
The Purdue Pest Management Program is holding a series of crop management workshops
around the state. They will include sessions on rootworms, pesticide regulation and
soil compaction. Continuing education units will be awarded to certified crop advisers,
and continuing certification hours are expected to be awarded to Indiana commercial
applicators in certified categories 1A and 10. The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Fee is $40, and preregistration is encouraged. CONTACT: John Obermeyer,

Jan. 28-29: 1997 Indiana Horticultural congress
The Horticultural Congress, to be held at the Adams Mark Hotel in Indianapolis, is
the annual meeting for several Indiana horticultural groups, including the Vegetable
Growers Association, Farm Market Association and the Organic Farmers and Marketers
Association. The program will focus on fruits and vegetables, marketing, new and alternative
crops, grapes and wine, and processing tomatoes. Several Purdue specialists will
make presentations. There also will be a trade show. Preregistration is $20 for the
first individual from a business or household; registration at the convention will be
$10 higher. Additional members of the operation can be registered for $15. The registration

feb. 6-7: North Central Regional Aquaculture Conference
This two-day conference at the Adams Mark Hotel in Indianapolis is for Midwest aqauculturists.
The conference, which is held every two years in a different Midwest state, will
focus on the fundamentals of fish farming to improve efficiency and features seminars on quality control, marketing, feeds and feeding, water quality, and computer
technology in aquaculture. Hosted by the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Program. Registration
is $75 before Jan. 22 and $100 after. Proceedings will cost $20, or $25 for the compact disk. For registration forms, contact LaDon Swann in the Department of Animal

feb. 7-8: farming together
This two-day workshop focuses on improving working relationships on the family farm.
Topics include business organization, writing job descriptions and determining reward
structures, and creating a mission statement and agreeing on goals. Participants
can be employers and employees, parents and adult children, spouses and partners. The
workshop will run from 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, to noon Saturday, Feb. 8, at Purdue's
