Hotel management program receives $40,000 gift

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A leading supplier of point-of-sale hardware, software and services to the hospitality industry has donated more than $40,000 in products and services to Purdue University's Department of Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional and Tourism Management.

Micros Systems Inc. and Electronic Business Machines Inc. donated a MICROS 8700 Point of Sale (POS) System, which is the system used by nearly a quarter of all the restaurants and hotels in the country. In a restaurant, for example, waitresses simply touch a computer screen and a customer's order is simultaneously sent to the kitchen and to the register for immediate preparation of the guest check. The computer also files and organizes the information for inventory and accounting purposes.

Lee M. Kreul, head of the department, said the system makes Purdue's graduates even more attractive to the hospitality industry.

"Our program already is recognized as one of the best in the country," he said. "This equipment will allow us to further enhance the experience of our graduates. Many of the top restaurant and hotel chains recruit our students, and many of those businesses use Micros equipment."

The equipment is housed in a new lab in Stone Hall and includes six touchscreen workstations, six printers, software and various other peripherals. Students will use the equipment in their computer classes, quantity foods class and cost control classes.

Micros Systems Inc. has headquarters in Beltsville, Md., and is the world's leading supplier of point-of-sale systems to the hospitality industry. The 19-year old company has a 200-member worldwide dealer network. Electronic Business Machines, one of Micros' top dealers, has locations in Greenwood, Ind., and Louisville, Ky.
