Teaching bioethics topic of panel discussion

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Four Purdue University staff members will participate in a panel discussion on methods of incorporating bioethics teaching in the classroom. The session will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, in Room 116 of the Agricultural and Research Building.

The presenters will report on how they included ethics-related material in their courses this semester. The participants and their topics:

Anna Berkovitz, instructor in biological sciences, "A Survey of Students' Attitudes: Professional Responsibility vs. Personal Ethics in a Case of Genetic Diagnosis."
Tom Hodges, who is the Joseph C. Arthur Distinguished Professor of Plant Physiology, "The Red Rice Controversy."
Sally MacKenzie, associate professor of agronomy, "Bioethical Concerns Involving Genetic Engineering in Our Society."
Suresh Mittal, assistant professor of molecular virology, "Nonzoonotic Infection of a Dog: When Should a Dog be Put to Sleep?"
All the panel members will be available for questions after the discussion.
All four participants attended the first Bioethics Workshop held at Purdue over five days last May. The next Bioethics Workshop is scheduled for May 18-22. Topics to be covered include genetic engineering; using animals in biomedical research; and agriculture and the environment. Persons interested in attending the spring workshop may pick up applications at the panel session.
