Old phone book collection set for Dec. 7

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University recycling crews will conduct their final major collection drive for old telephone directories during a special weekend collection Saturday, Dec. 7.

Chris Nolte, coordinator of refuse and recycling, said the collection will begin around 6 a.m. Old directories, including both Purdue and GTE phone books, should be boxed or bundled and left outdoors on loading docks or near outdoor green Purdue Recycling bins. The directories can be covered to protect them from the weather, but it is not necessary. Directories left indoors will not be picked up.

Nolte said the bundles can be put on the loading docks or next to the outdoor recycling bins before Dec. 7, but they will not be collected until then.

The old directories will be taken to the Jefferson Smurfit paper mill in Lafayette for recycling. Last year, 23 tons of phone books collected from campus were recycled, Nolte said.
