WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A redesigned Purdue University license plate will steam down the highways in 1997.
The new design consists of a white background, the new Boilermaker Special logo and a Purdue Boilermakers name tag at the bottom.
Robert Skadberg, a development associate who is in charge of the plate program, said: "The changes make the plate more legible and eye appealing. The plate should stand out more now at a distance." The previous plate, in existence since 1991, had a slanted block 'P' on black gridwork on a gold background.
Skadberg said he hoped that the new design would encourage more students, staff and faculty to purchase the plates. "People do not have to be alumni to show their support," he said.
The Purdue plate is a replacement for the standard Indiana license plate for passenger cars, recreational vehicles and trucks that weigh less than 11,000 pounds.
Plates are available by making at least a $25 tax-deductible contribution to Purdue's General Scholarship Fund and submitting an application to the Purdue Development Office. The application is certified and returned to the applicant, who then takes the form with the regular motor-vehicle registration papers to obtain the plate. License branches charge an extra $10 to process the special-issue plates.
The program has earned more than $750,000 for Purdue scholarships since its inception in 1991. Today there are 13,500 plate holders throughout the state, and Skadberg said 1996 has seen an especially strong increase in new plate holders.
Boilermaker fans in other states soon will be able to display their Purdue Pride, too. Purdue plates will be issued in Delaware this year and are in the planning stages in Virginia, Skadberg said.
Plate applications are available through Purdue's Development Office, at several campus locations and county license branches. Applications also are available through the World Wide Web at https://www.purdue.edu/UDO/plpp.html
