WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University chemists will observe National Chemistry Week Nov. 3-9 with presentations at 14 Lafayette-area schools and two public demonstrations that include hands-on activities for audiences of all ages.

The first demonstration will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Tippecanoe County Public Library. The second will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the West Lafayette Library.

Monday through Friday (11/4-8), the Purdue group will travel to 14 schools in the Greater Lafayette area to help students conduct experiments designed to help students recognize chemistry's role in everyday life.

The school activities are designed to increase student interest in science through safe and informative activities, said Jane Calhoun, a master's student in Purdue's Department of Chemistry and coordinator of the events.

The events are sponsored by members of the Purdue section of the American Chemical Society and Iota Sigma Pi, the national honor society for women in chemistry.
