Purdue research and education to travel across Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The latest in food and family research and education programs from Purdue University will be featured Nov. 11-14 at four public exhibitions in Columbus, Vincennes, Valparaiso and Fort Wayne.

"From Purdue to You" will showcase Purdue discoveries in crop and livestock production, new tools for reducing pesticide use and improving water quality, and new technologies to make food safer. Purdue Cooperative Extension Service programs that aid science teaching for school children, demystify family finances and teach better nutrition, parenting skills and food safety also will be highlighted.

The exhibitions are in response to requests from members of the Purdue Council for Agricultural Research, Extension and Teaching (P-CARET) that the annual state meeting be brought out to the state so more people could participate. P-CARET is a grassroots support group that promotes agricultural research and Extension and academic programs at Purdue.

While set up as P-CARET events, the free exhibitions are open to the public. Each show will feature 35 exhibits, staffed by faculty and staff members involved in the projects. Topics include property tax in Indiana, precision farming, urban pest management, biotechnology, youth environmental stewardship, aquaculture and childhood enrichment strategies.

"There are a number of people who want to know more about Purdue research and Extension programs and how they can help them in their lives, but they can't come to campus. This traveling exhibit is our way of introducing just a fraction of the programs we are working on," said Victor Lechtenberg, dean of Purdue's School of Agriculture. "Business and community leaders may like to come see what we're accomplishing in research and technology development at Purdue."

Teachers and students from area schools have been invited to attend in the early afternoon, and students are encouraged to bring their parents back in the evening. Academic advisers from Purdue's schools of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine and Consumer and Family Sciences will be on hand to discuss careers and fields of study.

"It will be a great chance to talk to the researchers and educators working on the opportunities and problems we face in Indiana," Lechtenberg said.

Each event will run from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The dates and locations are: Nov. 11, Columbus East High School, Columbus; Nov. 12, Lincoln High School, Vincennes ; Nov. 13, Valparaiso Expo Center, Valparaiso; and Nov. 14, Walb Student Union, IUPU Fort Wayne .

The annual state P-CARET meeting, at the Purdue Memorial Union on Dec. 3, will feature an additional 15 exhibits. That meeting also will be open to the public.
