Chamber music, storytelling combine in Purdue performance

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- "Tales of Appalachia," a unique composition for storyteller and chamber music trio, will be performed at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, in Fowler Hall at Purdue University. The offering is part of the Discovery Artist Series sponsored by the Friends of Purdue Convocations.

The piece, composed by Grammy Award-winner and former all-pro football player Mike Reid, will be performed by the Kandinsky Trio and storyteller Connie Regan-Blake.

"Tales of Appalachia" was commissioned for the Kandinsky Trio by a consortium of arts organizations in the Appalachian Mountains to introduce broad audiences to the windows of storytelling and the joy of chamber music. The story is about a cantankerous blacksmith who confronts forces of good and evil. The program also will include works by Peter Tchaikovsky.

The Kandinsky Trio -- piano, cello and violin -- is one of five piano trios to ever win the prestigious Chamber Music America Residency Award. Master storyteller Regan-Blake has enchanted concert- and festival-goers in North America, Europe and Asia. The Charlotte Observer says Regan-Blake has "a sense of timing that would make Rodney Dangerfield respectful."

The artists will be in residence at Purdue from Sunday, Nov. 10, through the performance Nov. 12. Activities include workshops with various elementary students, a master class for area music students and a workshop for storytellers at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at the Tippecanoe County Library.

Tickets for the Purdue performance are $8 for all seats at campus box offices. Charge by telephone at (317) 494-3933.
