4-H achievers awarded scholarships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The 29 winners of the 1996 Indiana 4-H Congress Accomplishment Scholarships will be recognized Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Indiana 4-H Congress.

Scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 will be awarded to the 4-H'ers for outstanding achievement. The congress will be from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.

To compete for the awards, members had to submit an application describing the life skills they had learned through involvement in 4-H programs. The 244 resumes received were judged by Purdue Cooperative Extension Service educators, who narrowed the field to 77 applicants. These semifinalists were asked to submit a five-minute videotape about their 4-H experiences, and the top 29 were chosen for scholarship awards.

In addition, each of the top male and female 4-H members in achievement, leadership and citizenship received Governor's Trays. These members are: Bree Emsweller, Hendricks County; Peter Rudolph, Warrick County; Betsy Evers, Elkhart County; Drew Emsweller, Hendricks County; Brian Graf, Clark County; and Janelle Sommers, Kosciusko County.

The Challenge Leadership Program also will be held in conjunction with the scholarship recognition. This program teaches leadership skills to 300-400 4-H'ers and almost 100 junior leader advisers from around the state.
