Bertoline becomes head of technical graphics department

WESTVILLE, Ind.–Gary R. Bertoline, professor of technical graphics, has been named head of the Department of Technical Graphics in Purdue University's School of Technology.

The Purdue Board of Trustees today (Friday, 5/19) ratified the appointment at its meeting on the university's North Central campus. The appointment is etfective July 1.

"Professor Bertoline has an outstanding record of teaching, scholarship and national leadership in the field of technical graphics," said Don K Gentry, dean of the School of Technology. "His vision for the future takes into consideration rapid changes in technology in the field and is aligned with the goals of the school and the university."

Bertoline succeeds Professor Jerry V Smith, department head since 1985, who is retuming to teaching and research. Bertoline, a native of Norwav. Mich., joined Purdue in l99O as an associate professor of technical graphics. He was named professor in 1994. Before coming to Purdue, Bertoline was an assistant professor of engineering graphics from 1987 to l99O at The ohio State University

Bertoline completed his undergraduate studies at Northem Michigan University. He received his master's degree from Miami University in ohio and his doctoral degree from ohio State In 1992 he became the youngest recipient of the orthogona1 Award, which is given by North Carolina State University's Department of Graphic Communications to a nationally prominent graphics educator.

In 1993 he was named a Certified Industrial Technologist by the National Association for Industrial Technology and was awarded the American Society for Engineering Education Centennial Certificate of Recognition.

Bertoline is a member of numerous academic, professional and scholarly societies, including Special Interest Group in Graphics (SIGGRAPH), the National Association of Industrial Technology and the An~erican Society for Engineering Education. He has written 10 textbooks and numerous technical papers and articles in professional journals.
