August 20, 1993 Purdue Marching Band's Solo Twirlers Selected
WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. A veteran Golden Girl and Girl in Black and a new set of Silver Twins will be the solo twirlers with Purdue University's "All-American" Marching Band for the 1993-94 season. Returning for her fourth year as Golden Girl XVII is Holly Fehrman, a senior in elementary education from Aurora, Ind.
In her third year as Girl in Black is Alisha Bane, a senior in secondary education from Oxford.
The new Silver Twins are Kelly Beyer, a sophomore in elementary education from Chesterton, Ind., and Ann Burman, a junior in advertising from Dublin, Ohio.
The four solo twirlers were selected after auditions on the Purdue campus Thursday (8/19) during the marching band's preseason camp. The solo twirlers not only perform with the band, but also represent the university at meetings and other events. About wrapping up her college twirling career, Fehrman said: "It's special to go out with one more year as Golden Girl. Performing is always a thrill, as is meeting people and fans." She said the highlight of her career was last year's trip to Singapore, where the band performed in a celebration of the Chinese lunar new year at the invitation of the government of Singapore. Girl in Black Bane also said she enjoys the solo performances, as well as performing and speaking at Purdue alumni club meetings and events. The new Silver Twins were formerly with the "All-American" Twirling Line. Beyer said being selected a solo twirler fulfilled a lifetime dream. Burman said she is excited to be part of the tradition of being a Purdue band solo twirler. All four twirlers bring award-winning credentials to the positions. Fehrman, who has been involved in competitive twirling since age 9, has won top-five awards in national competitions and top-three honors in state and regional contests, and has won more than 200 trophies in various events. She received the Outstanding Twirler Award with the "All-American" band in her junior year. Bane began twirling competitively at age 7 and holds more than 400 state, regional and national awards, including grand champion in strut and dance twirling at the Indiana State Fair. She was Indiana's 1990 Junior Miss. Beyer has won All Star Show Stopper and Show Stopper of the Week twirling awards and top honors at a twirling camp. Burman has won a variety of state, regional and national awards and was a 1993 Miss Ohio State Fair Majorette. The internationally recognized Golden Girl position was created in 1954 as the band's counterpart to legendary Boilermaker football quarterback Lenny Dawson, who was dubbed by the press as Purdue's Golden Boy. The band added the Silver Twins in 1960, and the Girl in Black position was created in 1962. Purdue News Service: (765) 494-2096; purduenews@purdue.edu
