November 2, 1990 Schleman Time CapsuleWest Lafayette, Ind. The student services staff at Purdue University plans to gather Nov. 9 to help preserve a bit of history. Richard E. Grace, vice president for student services, and Marvin R. Schlatter, assistant vice president for student services, are among those planning to participate in the placement of a time capsule at Helen B. Schleman Hall of Student Services. The ceremony is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. near the building's main entrance. The program is the last part of a building project that started three years ago, when the state legislature authorized funding. The building, named for the former dean of women at Purdue, was dedicated April 21. Schleman was an instructor at Ohio State University before coming to Purdue in 1934 to become director of women's residence halls. She was appointed dean of women in 1947 and served in that post until her retirement in 1968. "It (the ceremony) is a family celebration for the people in student services," Schlatter said. "It is a time for the people here to get together and prepare something for the people who will follow us." The time capsule will contain numerous items of this decade that should be uncovered by people of the next century. Schlatter said the contents will include photographs of the building's groundbreaking, construction and dedication. Other documents will include newspaper articles, a program from Schleman Hall's dedication, and the dedication and 50th-anniversary programs for Elliott Hall of Music. Schlatter said several other documents and publications from the student services office will be part of the time capsule's contents. The capsule and its contents will be placed in a masonry block just to the right of Schleman's main entrance. The capsule placement will be registered with the Purdue Libraries so future generations will be able to locate it, Schlatter said. Schleman Hall consists of the remodeled Geosciences Building and a new 31,800-square-foot building. The renovation and new construction cost $5.86 million. The structure is home for the vice president of student services, dean of students, admissions, financial aid, student finance and international students offices. Most of these offices were formerly housed in Hovde Hall of Administration. Purdue News Service: (765) 494-2096; purduenews@purdue.edu |
