May 16, 1986 Beineke Named Jack W. Schrey Professor of MathematicsWest Lafayette, Ind. Lowell W. Beineke, a distinguished mathematician and acclaimed graph theorist, Friday (5/16) was named Jack W. Schrey professor of mathematics by the Purdue University Board of Trustees. Beineke's honor is the first such named professorship in the history of Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne ( IPFW) . In recommending the appointment, Purdue President Steven C. Beering told the trustees: "The creation of a named professorship at the Fort Wayne campus signals the beginning of a new era of recognition of distinguished scholarship at regional campuses throughout the state. There will be many more appointments like this one in the years to come, and Professor Beineke is an outstanding choice for IPFW's first." Edward A. Nicholson, acting chancellor of IPFW, said, "Professor Beineke has achieved a well-deserved reputation as an international scholar in the field of graph theory. His colleagues rank him among the top graph theorists in the world. His students rate him the best teacher in his department. All who meet him appreciate this gentle, unassuming man whose copious research and excellent teaching record have brought such credit to the university." Beineke, a native of Decatur, came to IPFW in 1965 after completing his bachelor's degree at Purdue and his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Michigan. Maynard J. Mansfield, professor and chair of the department of mathematical sciences at IPFW, noted that Beineke has written three respected books on graph theory and nearly 60 articles, as well as being invited to present papers and speak at numerous international mathematics symposia. Mansfield said the first doctoral dissertation completed in Indiana under the supervision of a regional-campus professor was directed by Beineke. Beineke, 46, is listed in Who's Who in the Midwest and American Men and Women of Science. His professional memberships include the American Mathematical Society, Mathematical Association of America, London Mathematical Society, American Association of University Professors and Society of the Sigma Xi. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Graph Theory. He received the Amoco outstanding Teacher Award in 1978. The professorship is named for Jack W. Schrey, the former chairman of Magnavox Government & Industrial Electronics Co., who died at age 69 in December 1985. Schrey was a long-time supporter of IPFW and member of IPFW's Community Advisory Council. The Schrey Professorship has been financed in part by the Frank Friemann Foundation, Magnavox Government & Electronics Co., and friends of Jack Schrey.
