Purdue administrators flip over campus campaign
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Purdue President Martin C. Jischke today (Thursday, 1/15) kicked off the campus portion of the The Campaign for Purdue, the university's $1.3 billion fund drive, by flipping pancakes in honor of faculty, staff and retirees who have supported Purdue.
The event took place at 7 a.m. in the Purdue Memorial Union.
"I've led four universities, and never have I found the level of commitment and support that we are seeing from this Purdue family," Jischke said. "They genuinely care about Purdue and are devoted to making it the best it can be."
Purdue officials hope to raise $40 million from the campus community by the time the seven-year campaign ends in 2007, and so far has brought in $26 million. In 2003 alone, 5,549 faculty and staff 35 percent of all employees donated a total of $10.5 million.
"The theme for the campus portion of the Campaign for Purdue 'It starts at home' captures the fact that we not only work here, we also believe in this great university and are willing to invest in it," said Peggy Rowe, vice provost and campus campaign co-chair with her husband William Rowe, professor of philosophy. Both they and 17 other faculty and administrators joined Jischke as pancake chefs.
Betty Nelson and Roy Johnson are Campus Campaign Retiree Advisory Committee co-chairs.
As of the end of December, the Campaign for Purdue had raised $838 million to support the objectives of Purdue's strategic plan, which include raising $200 million for student scholarships, $200 million for faculty recruitment and retention, $200 million for programs and centers, $600 million for facilities and equipment, and $100 million in unrestricted funds.
