Voice of Purdue sports remembered in WBAA special

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - WBAA, Purdue University's public radio station, will honor longtime station manager John DeCamp on Saturday (12/13) with a one-hour special.

"Remembering John DeCamp" will be broadcast at 6 p.m. on WBAA AM920. The program will examine DeCamp's impact on people throughout Lafayette, West Lafayette and Purdue. DeCamp, a Kendallville, Ind., native, was the voice of Purdue football and basketball for 43 years.

Some of the show's guests include Purdue head basketball coach Gene Keady, Boilermaker football great Leroy Keyes and DeCamp friend Jack Ehresman. WBAA also will dip into the station archives for some of DeCamp's memorable play-by-play moments.

DeCamp was station manager of WBAA, which became the flagship station of the Purdue Sports Radio Network. He finished his career as director of public relations and promotions for intercollegiate athletics and retired in 1986.

DeCamp also was part of the Indianapolis 500 Radio Network team for 22 years. He was named Top Broadcaster of the Year in Indiana in 1971, was inducted into the Indiana Journalism Hall of Fame in 1974 and was chosen for the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

DeCamp, 82, died last week after a lengthy illness.
