December 5, 2003 Appointments and promotions– Ernest F. Poland, former housing and food services computing director, was promoted to the position of executive director of university residences. Poland has been on the Purdue staff for nearly 15 years, with two years on the faculty of the Department of Restaurant, Hotel, Institutional and Tourism Management and 13 years in housing and food services. He holds a bachelor's degree in Restaurant and Hotel Management from Purdue and a master's degree in business administration from Michigan State University. The program was conducted in the residence halls from Oct. 16 to Nov. 16. Purdue collected 2,521 pints of blood for the Indiana Blood Center, and IU collected 2,500 pints. Faculty and staff honors– Rashid Bashir, an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been chosen by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as one of the nation's top 20 researchers from South Asia under the age of 40. Bashir was one of six winners in the "nanotechnology, materials and devices" category of the MIT Sloan School of Management's Global Indus Technovators Awards. The researchers received their awards during a ceremony on Nov. 25 on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Mass. Bashir was recognized for his research toward developing "biochips," or miniature sensors capable of rapidly detecting biological entities from air or water, and for efforts to commercialize these technologies. More information about the awards program is available online. – Five Purdue University women faculty members were honored at the second annual Women of Purdue Mortar Board Welcome Reception on Dec. 4. This year's honorees are Nancy Bulger, assistant provost; Julie Cowan Novak, associate dean for the Schools of Pharmacy, Nursing and Health Sciences; Joann Otto, associate dean of the School of Science; Mary Sadowski, associate dean of the School of Technology; and Christie Sahley, associate dean of the School of Science. – Bridget Williams Golden, assistant dean of students, received the Outstanding New Professional Award from the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. – Dennis R. Depew, dean of the School of Technology and professor of industrial technology, received a distinguished service citation from the Gamma Rho chapter of Epsilon Pi Tau, an international honorary organization for technology professions. He was honored for professional leadership in technology, research in advanced technology education and vocational teacher training, and for mentoring technology faculty through his leadership role as department head and dean. He received the award on Nov. 15. – John Feldhusen, a retired Purdue professor of education and psychology, was honored on Nov. 13 at the annual meeting of the National Association for Gifted Children in Indianapolis. The Ann F. Isaacs Award was presented to Feldhusen in recognition of career-long contributions and leadership to the field of gifted education. Feldhusen founded the Purdue Gifted Education Resource Institute, a center in the School of Education. The center offers educational programs for gifted youth, teachers of the gifted, and schools throughout the world. Purdue faculty and staff associated with the Gifted Education Resource Institute presented 15 papers at the conference on topics such as using model-eliciting activities to develop mathematical talent, minority recruitment for summer enrichment programs, counseling gifted adolescents, support groups for parents of gifted students, and personal talent development.
