November 26, 2003 Ross-Ade bus route makes safer, warmer stop beginning Dec. 1WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - As winter settles in, Purdue University and CityBus are teaming up to get bus riders out of the cold and into a cup of coffee or a quick browse of the Internet. The bus stop that serves the parking lot north of Ross-Ade Stadium will be relocated to just across the street from the Cyber Café at Ross-Ade. More than 600 cars use the lot in the athletics complex daily, and more than 700 students, faculty and staff catch the bus at a shelter along Beering Drive. "The relocation of the bus shelter is as much a safety issue as anything else," said Wayne Kjonaas, vice president for physical facilities. "Folks will no longer have to get across a street to catch the bus as they have since the Beering Drive shelter went up." The change will take effect Monday (12/1) and involves shortening the existing 17 Ross-Ade route, which loops around the central academic campus and returns to Ross-Ade. Rather than continuing north on North University Drive as in the past, the bus will turn left at Victory Drive. After picking up and dropping off passengers at the corner of Victory and North University, the bus will continue to Beering Drive and head south back to campus. The portion of the route that extended to the north end of the parking lot will be eliminated, and CityBus patrons are being notified of the change. "We're sensitive to this being a change in the routine, but we will provide ample signage and reminders about what we believe is a great change for our customers," said Martin Sennett, CityBus general manager. In addition to the Cyber Café offerings of gourmet blends and breakfast and lunch menus, the building is equipped with an ATM and restrooms. The shelter is being relocated at the expense of Intercollegiate Athletics. "We want to provide a safer way for our commuters to get to the main campus, and we want folks to take a minute to try out the Cyber Café at Ross-Ade," said Morgan Burke, director of intercollegiate athletics. "It's warm in there, the coffee is hot and for those who've got mail, we provide access to Purdue Airlink." Purdue Airlink is the wireless network installed across campus by Information Technology at Purdue. It allows laptop computers and other devices equipped with wireless cards to access the Internet. "We've installed wireless access points, and we invite the Purdue community to catch the next bus, have a cup of coffee and surf the Net," said Jim Bottum, vice president for information technology.
