Faculty and staff honors– Lefteri Tsoukalas, head of Purdue's School of Nuclear Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Nuclear Society "for his outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear science and technology," according to a statement from ANS. Tsoukalas received the honor on Nov. 18 during a joint meeting of ANS and the European Nuclear Society in New Orleans. ANS bestows the fellow designation on members whose research, invention or leadership has provided significant impact in one or more disciplines of nuclear science and engineering. The American Nuclear Society is a not-for-profit, international, scientific and educational organization made up of 10,500 engineers, scientists, administrators and educators. – Louis A. Sherman of the Department of Biological Sciences was appointed chair of the board of trustees of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) effective Oct. 1, 2003. Board members primarily serve as a financial oversight component of the scientific membership organization. Founded in 1924, the ASPB is a non-profit science society representing nearly 6,000 plant scientists from around the world. ASPB publishes two of the three most widely cited plant science journals in the world, The Plant Cell and Plant Physiology. – Sidney Pellissier, associate professor of French in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, has been awarded the Chevalier des Palmes Académiques by the French embassy. The award is given by the French government to those who promote French culture and education. – John Graveel and Eileen Kladivko were named fellows of the Soil Science Society of America. The awards were presented at the society's annual meetings Nov. 2-6 in Denver, Colo. Graveel, professor of agronomy, is director of the Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences program at Purdue. His background is in soil microbiology/chemistry, and his research involves soil management. Kladivko, professor of agronomy, conducts research on preferential flow of chemicals through soils, tile drainage and water quality, conservation tillage, and the impact of earthworms on soil physical properties.
