Annual Hunger Banquet on Nov. 19 to raise money, awareness

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue Student Union Board will again hold its Hunger Banquet to dramatize the unequal distribution of world food resources and raise money for Lafayette's Food Finders Food Bank.

Guests at the banquet, which will be Wednesday (11/19) in the Purdue Memorial Union East Faculty Lounge, will be served portion sizes determined by the income level of the group they pick in a drawing as they enter.

The largest portions will be served to 15 percent of the attendees, representing the percentage of the world's population with high incomes. Moderate portions will be served to 30 percent, representing the percentage of the world population with middle incomes. The largest group, 55 percent, will receive the smallest portions of food to represent the more than half of the world population with the lowest incomes.

"Few leave the Hunger Banquet with full stomachs, but all leave filled with a greater understanding of the world around us," said Bryan Chew, PSUB director of ideas and issues. "The Hunger Banquet enables participants to experience the seemingly arbitrary nature of world food distribution and challenges them to appreciate their place among the world's high-income populations."

Tickets are $3 for students and $6 for the general public. Tickets are available at the Purdue Student Union Board office, Purdue Memorial Union, Room 268.
