Boilermaker Fall Harvest Food Drive starts Nov. 13

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The 4th Annual Boilermaker Fall Harvest Food Drive will be held on campus Nov. 13-19, with the goal of collecting 15,000 pounds of food for the needy in the greater Lafayette area.

Sponsored by the Boiler Volunteer Network, the campuswide food drive gives students faculty and staff the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged families and have fun at the same time, said Sara Solloway, Purdue Memorial Union program director.

Faculty and staff, student groups, and the residence halls are invited to compete to see which group collects the most food. The public can donate food in the name of a group, which will count towards that group's total.

Food collected during the drive will be weighed Nov. 20-21 on a scale set up under the mural in Stewart Center.

During last year's food drive, 58 groups and 45 volunteers collected 10,238 pounds of food, Solloway said.

The groups compete against each other within their category and the three categories compete against each other. Last year's winners, their categories and the pounds of food collected were: 1st place, Students of BCM 216 (student organizations), 4,673 pounds; 2nd place, Student Health Center (staff departments), 572 pounds; 3rd place, Tarkington Hall (residence halls), 251 pounds.

Campus individuals and groups are invited to compete and may register with the Boiler Volunteer Network in Stewart Center, Room G4. Winners will be announced after Thanksgiving.

All food collected will be donated to Food Finders Food Bank in conjunction with Lafayette Community Harvest.

The Boiler Volunteer Network has been a part of the Purdue University campus since 2000 and became a division of the Office of the Dean of Students in the summer of 2003.
