Fuchs to deliver annual McCoy lecture Tuesday

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Philip L. Fuchs will present this year's McCoy Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday (11/4) at 3:30 p.m. in Stewart Center’s Fowler Hall. A reception will follow in the Stewart Center Art Gallery.

Fuchs, professor of chemistry in Purdue's School of Science, will speak on "Chemistry, Computers and Cancer." The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Fuchs is the winner of the 2003 Herbert Newby McCoy Award, presented annually to a Purdue student or faculty member for outstanding contributions to science. The award was established in 1964 by Ethel Terry McCoy in memory of her husband, a Purdue alumnus. The winner is nominated by colleagues and selected by faculty representatives and the university's president.

"The McCoy award is the most prestigious research award given by Purdue," said Charles Rutledge, interim vice provost for research and executive director of Discovery Park.

Fuchs' talk should be of interest to anyone curious about the increased need for computers to sort through and evaluate the great number of chemical compounds that hold potential as drugs, particularly as anticancer agents. The use of computer-based modeling will be discussed in the context of teaming up with nature to attack the cancer problem.
