October 31, 2003 Purdue students' public affairs coverage to air on local cable channelWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University communication and political science students are filming and producing public affairs programs about local and university meetings in "C-SPAN style." The University Senate and Student Senate programs will air at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday (11/4) and 6 p.m. Wednesday (11/5) on Insight, channel 13. The University Senate meeting was filmed Oct. 20 and the Student Senate meeting on Oct. 22. In the "Public Affairs Production" class, students produced, directed, videotaped and recorded sound just as if they were working for C-SPAN. Students applied what they learned from class lectures and interviews conducted with C-SPAN employees, including founder Brian Lamb, via a distance-learning connection between Purdue and C-SPAN in Washington, D.C. Lamb is a Purdue 1963 communication graduate. C-SPAN, the nation's eight-largest cable network, records daily congressional proceedings and other public affairs activities for public viewing on cable or Internet. C-SPAN maintains the archive of all of its programming in the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette. "This is the first university course to teach students about the C-SPAN style," said Robert Browning, associate professor of political science and director of the C-SPAN Archives. "Most telecommunications education is about documentaries or television news. We have brought political science and communication students together to learn the different aspects for each field, for example, how politicians arrange and use media coverage." Scott Schroeder, video production instructor in the Department of Communication who is co-teaching the class, added, "Not only are the students learning the mechanics of C-SPAN's multicamera field work, but they also are learning how to cover current events in an unbiased method." The students' next assignment is to produce public affairs coverage at a local meeting using single camera fieldwork.
