October 29, 2003 Purdue helping adults walk toward healthy lifestylesWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Active and novice walkers are invited to walk in Purdue University's first Community Walking Event from 2-4 p.m. Sunday (11/2). The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the A.H. Ismail Center for Health, Exercise and Education and the Department of Health and Kinesiology. Participants will walk about 2.5 miles, starting at Pickett Park on Stadium Avenue to Lindberg Road and back. The Community Walking Program started this fall and is open to the general public. Those interested can join community walking groups, which meet at various times and locations in the Greater Lafayette area. Those wanting more information about the walking groups or the Community Walking Program can call (765) 496-1015 or e-mail walkingclub2003@yahoo.com. "We know people are interested in being active and losing weight," said Ken Baldwin, assistant director at the Ismail Center. "This is a practical approach that is free, and it offers a variety of choices including location, time and even walking pace." The 10 Purdue faculty or staff members who act a walking group leaders have completed a training seminar in the healthy aspects of walking. More than 70 people participate in the Community Walking Program. Community Walking Event participants can order a Subway sandwich and apple cider for $4.
