Community's Campaign for Purdue introduces leadership committee

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –Purdue University announced today (Monday 10/27) that more than two dozen Lafayette-West Lafayette community leaders have joined forces to help the Campaign for Purdue meet its $1.3 billion fund-raising goal.

Joe Seaman, who was previously announced as co-chair for the community campaign effort with Linda Rohrman, said he looks forward to the collaboration with the other committee members to make the campaign a success and share the Purdue message with the community.

"Together we can accomplish great things," Seaman said. "We have a wonderful group of true community leaders who are united in the effort to elicit local involvement in the Campaign for Purdue. It will be our mission to update the community about the enormous impact Purdue has on all our lives and to give community members the opportunity to be involved as campaign donors."

In addition to Seaman and Rohrman, there also are four honorary co-chairpersons for the community campaign: Barbara F. Kampen, Bennet R. and Maxine R. Miller, and James Shook. The remainder of the community campaign committee includes Anthony S. Benton, James Bodenmiller, Jerry A Brand, G. Bart Burrell, William F. Connors, Jim R. and Marilynn Dammon, Frederick R. Ford, Robert L. Griffiths, Robert E. Hannemann, Gary D. Henriott, Mary Ann Junius, Peter T. Kissinger, Gary J. Lehman, Betty M. Nelson, Sandra H. Pearlman, Robert C. Reiling Jr., E. Dana Smith Jr., Jay G. Smith, and Charles R. Vaughan.

Carolyn S. Gery, associate vice president for development and executive director of President's Council, Murray M. Blackwelder, senior vice president for advancement, and Steven D. Shelby, associate director of corporate and foundation relations are the committee's Purdue representatives.

Gifts to date include two from the leaders of the community campaign:

Jim and Marilynn Dammon, of West Lafayette, today announced they are giving $3.3 million to Purdue for scholarships. He is vice president of engineering at Fairfield Manufacturing. The Dammons also own Kings Hill Stable, which Marilynn operates.

Jim Shook, Lafayette businessman and entrepreneur, and his wife, Jan, were recognized this August as the first contributors to the community campaign. They gave $500,000 to fund a distinguished professorship in the School of Chemical Engineering in honor of Jim Shook's maternal grandfather, Harry Creighton Peffer.

The last community fund-raising effort for Purdue was conducted in 1994 to benefit the university's Vision 21 Campaign. Blackwelder said that while the campaign committee has not yet set a goal for the local campaign, committee members hope to exceed the $4 million raised for the last campaign.
