Severson Memorial Walk/Run to be Oct. 25

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Race organizers expect a good turnout on Saturday (10/25) for the annual Jay Severson Memorial Walk/Run. The 5-kilometer run and 1.5-mile walk will start at 8 a.m. in front of Wiley Hall.

"This race is in memory of a student counselor who did his job and is a reminder of what can happen when people use drugs and go down the wrong path," said Denton Sederquist, Wiley Hall residential life manager.

Severson, a graduate student and Wiley Hall counselor, was killed by another student in 1996 after Severson found drugs in the student's residence hall room. The race is being held in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week events throughout Tippecanoe County. Red Ribbon Week is the annual nationwide campaign promoting drug- and alcohol-abuse awareness.

Pre-registration for the races closed on Monday (10/20), but walk-up registration is available starting at 7:30 a.m. on race day.

"I'm pleased with preregistration response," Sederquist said. "I hope we'll have a good walk-up crowd as well."

The event, sponsored by University Residences, will start and end in front of Wiley Hall, 500 N. Intramural Drive. Streets will remain open to vehicle traffic throughout the races.

The entry fee is $10. Entry forms are available at any residence hall front office or online at https://www.housing.purdue.edu/CurrentStudents/JaySeverson.htm.

All proceeds will benefit the Jay Severson Memorial Fund, which provides money for education, training and counseling for the prevention of drug use and abuse.

Those who do not wish to participate in the race but who would like to contribute to the fund can send checks to 500 N. Intramural Drive, West Lafayette, IN 47906. Make checks payable to the Purdue Foundation, with Jay Severson Memorial Fund written on the memo line. For more information, contact Sederquist at (765) 494-2174, sederquist@purdue.edu.
