Parenting series to be broadcast at Purdue Extension sites

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A statewide satellite series about cultural perspectives on parenting can be seen Oct. 23 and Nov. 13 at Purdue University Cooperative Extension offices around Indiana.

Dee Love, a Purdue Extension human development specialist, said the two-part series is geared toward people who work with families, such as educators, child care providers, social workers, counselors and faith leaders.

Series topics will address how culture influences parenting and how to use family-centered practices to support families from different cultures.

"Culture is more than heritage," Love said. "It's a combination of attitudes, feelings, thoughts, values, beliefs and behaviors that are shared by a group."

Nationally recognized presenters will share research findings and applications. Some of the topics slated for discussion include family-centered practices, cultural competency, influence of culture and parenting in diverse cultures. Presenters will take call-in questions from viewers, and continuing education credits are available. Information about credits is available online.

"Purdue Extension is co-sponsoring this series to bring this important resource to Indiana," Love said. "Part of celebrating Indiana's diversity is understanding our different cultural perspectives and how they make stronger families and communities."

The series, which is free and open to the public, will be broadcast from 1:30-4:30 p.m. (EST) Oct. 23 and from 2:30-5:30 p.m. (EST) Nov. 13. In addition to the broadcast, local activities are planned during that time.
