October 6, 2003 All American Dining Room receives design awardWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University's All American Dining Room, located in the newly renovated Cary Quadrangle residence hall, has been named a Bronze Citation Award winner in a national architectural design competition.
The award—winning facility is featured in the August issue of American School and University magazine's annual Educational Interiors Showcase competition. The award was recently presented to Scholer Corp., Architecture, Engineering and Interiors along with Rowland Design of Indianapolis, for design excellence and creativity. Originally converted from a student lounge in the mid 1980s and redesigned to be used as a training table dining room for all Purdue athletic teams, additional changes were made this past year. The All American Dining Room now has seating for 140 and serves a wide variety of foods. The décor features large pillars, a three-dimensional ceiling treatment and yellow walls with photos of former Purdue All-American athletes. Stainless steel serving tables have surfaces designed to look like picnic tables. John Sautter, Purdue vice president for Housing and Food Services, says he is pleased the All American Dining Room is receiving national recognition for its innovative design. "From the remodeling of facilities like the All American Dining Room to the creation of modern food courts, Purdue University Residences is making a concerted effort to offer dining options that please both the eye and the palate," Sautter said. "Students not only like to stay on campus to eat, they like to linger and enjoy their environment." Dennis A. Miller, head athletic trainer, said the All American Dining Room is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional compared to many of the dining rooms where athletes eat at other universities. "The renovation of the All American Dining Hall has added functionally, grace and comfort to the menu," Miller said. "We always have been provided a quality menu with superb quality and service. The dining room is now functionally able to service the needs of all 18 sports teams." The Educational Interiors Showcase competition, held annually by American School & University magazine, is promoted as the premier competition honoring educational interior design excellence. Of the 90 projects selected for publication, the All American Dining Room is one of only 23 selected to receive citation awards. The magazine noted the "interesting use of curves, color and free-flowing space." Scholer Corp., a 27-member firm of architects, engineers and interior designers, was founded in 1925 in Lafayette, Ind., by Walter Scholer Sr. The firm specializes in facility design for educational, institutional, religious and health care clients. Projects range in size and scope from small commercial sites to construction and renovations for major universities such as Purdue.
